Robert Powell has spent a lifetime in education, as a classroom
teacher, Head of Department, Head of Year, Deputy Head and
Headteacher. He led Blurton High School in Stoke-on-Trent
for just over four years during which time the school nearly
doubled its higher grade GCSE passes and its SATs scores at
Key Stage 3. In 2001 the school received a glowing report
from Ofsted who judged 99% of lessons to be at least satisfactory
and nearly 70% good.
Before
taking up his headship in 1997 he worked for eight years in
publishing and consultancy. He was the co-founder of Network
Educational Press and Network Consultancy, but
left to set up Robert Powell Training, Consultancy and
Publications in 1996. He has written six books, Resources
for Flexible Learning in 1991 and the highly successful
Raising Achievement, Raising Achievement in the
Primary School (with John Stringer), Active Whole-Class
Teaching (also in interactive CD format), and Removing
the Learning Dip in the Middle Years. His training videos,
launched in 1999, and the interactive CDs for KS3 published
in late 2002, have proved to be very popular. He has worked
on INSET with over 1000 primary and secondary schools and
numerous colleges across the UK and he is renowned for his
challenging and humorous style of presentation. He recently
worked as a part-time Consultant to the DfES within the Innovation
Unit and the Leading Edge Partnership Programme.
